Do overnight charging affects your smartphone's battery life?

Have you ever hear'd or read somewhere that charging your smartphone overnight will harm your battery life? This is a myth that is been persisting for years. Many have the habit of charging it overnight so when you wake up you have your smartphone fully charged and ready to go. So the question is what happen when you overcharge your smartphone?

First of all all the smartphone now a days have Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries charge faster and lasts longer that why its been preferred for smart devices.

I don't know whether you noticed or not, when you charge your smartphone it charges quickly till it reaches 80% and then it lakes a while to reach 100% . So what happens once it reach 100%? The smartphones are built in a way that it prevents taking more current when it is fully charged. That means the current flow to the battery is cut once it reaches 100%.

Then by default the mobile phones will slowly discharge its power. So when it reaches to a charge level below 100%, the smartphone understands that the devices needs to be charged. So this is what will happen when you charge your smartphone, it will charge to 100% and discharge and charge again and repeats until you unplug your smartphone.

Your Smartphones life will basically depend on the charge cycles. So once you use your smartphone from 100% to 0% that counts one cycle. So one thing to note about overcharging smartphone is the temperature.

One more myth about batteries are that you need to charge your new device to 100%. So if you buy a smartphone and its 50% when you open from box you can straight away start using the phone. Actually why this myth existed was because of the older battery technology. Now Lithium-Ion batteries are so smarter that you don't need to charge to 100% of you new device.
