I can only recommend the smartphone that would work for most of the people and which has great camera, design, screen, performance and support structure.

There are only two major categories of smartphones you can buy, Iphone and android phones. A lot of great smartphones are launched this year IPhone X, Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6 etc. But in my opinion IPhone X is the best smartphone you can buy right now. why? 

Due to following reasons,

1. It has great design which is futuristic, it has 5.8 inch edge to edge amoled display with tiny notch on top.But trust me after using the IPhone X for a while you will not notice the notch much. But I also know that people hate the notch but as a android fanboy I hate to say that this is future most of the android phones have notch even Google Pixel 3 is coming with the notch.After 2 or 3 years IPhone X design will not be look outdated.
2. It has great camera. if not the best but great for most of the people.
3. It has great performance. 
4. And lastly it has a great support structure from apple. The average life of IPhone is minimum 3 years. If you take an example of IPhone 5s, It can now support IOS 12 and this smartphone is from 2013, 5 years old. On the other hand, most of the android phones do not get latest software updates as a result IPhones are more secure then android phones

Now it is not necessarily a perfect smartphone, It does not have a headphone jack, it is very pricey and it glass can easily break when it fall on ground which is very expensive to repair but i still think it is a best choice. If you do not want to spend $1000 on IPhone X then you can buy IPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

If you hate IPhones then you can buy Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus or Note 8 these smartphones are great in android category
